Objective Summary: The Communications department seeks a Website Administrator/Developer to complement current writing, cartography, graphic design, and multimedia production capabilities and enhance science storytelling across all Woodwell Climate websites. The Website Administrator/Developer is responsible for developing and maintaining dynamic, accessible, brand-aligned websites for Woodwell Climate Research Center and affiliated projects. This individual is a creative thinker capable of working in close collaboration across multiple internal and external teams to translate storytelling goals into innovative, compelling web experiences, particularly through integration of applications for interactive visualization of scientific data.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of maintaining, expanding, and scaling our Wordpress-based website, woodwellclimate.org
  • Create and maintain project websites of varying scopes and designs in collaboration with science and design teams
  • Work collaboratively with Communications, GIS, and science team members to develop and integrate interactive maps, applications, and spatial data visualizations into Woodwell Climate websites
  • Integrate data from various back-end services and databases into websites and web-based data visualizations
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and best practices in web applications and programming
  • Track trends and regularly update all Woodwell Climate websites to ensure highest standards of accessibility and security
  • Support Communications Manager in ensuring website content is updated regularly and coordinated with other channels
  • Work with Communications Manager to monitor and report out on key metrics of website reach and engagement
  • Contribute creative ideas for enhancing website reach, engagement, and accessibility
  • Serve as an advocate for user experience during idea generation and development of new web sites, pages, and content

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in web development, computer information systems, or computer science, or equivalent coursework in web technologies (ex. Professional Certificate programs, Bootcamps, etc.)
  • 5+ years of experience in web programming and website maintenance
  • A solid understanding of how web applications work including security, session management, and best development practices
  • In-depth knowledge of HTML5, CSS, MySQL, PHP, and an advanced understanding of JavaScript, Python, or similar high-level language and relevant libraries
  • Experience with custom Wordpress themes
  • Experience with either building interactive chart visualizations or using tools and libraries that do so
  • Working knowledge of a source control and issue management system, preferably GitHub
  • Professional portfolio/willingness to share data visualization examples as a demonstration of skills and experience
  • Ability to think creatively in problem-solving and debugging
  • Strong data management, communication, and quality assurance skills
  • Self-driven to learn and push new ideas
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively

  • Experience with network diagnostics, network analytics tools, and Google Analytics
