JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Director will work in the Water Supply program in Georgia to advocate for healthy rivers and their many public benefits with an eye toward adaptations needed for a changing climate. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Water Supply Director to secure reliable and predictable clean water supplies for communities and the rivers on which they depend by developing and promoting local, state, and regional polices and practices to promote water efficiency, low impact supplies and healthy river flows. The Associate Director will also work in the Flint River basin to restore and protect healthy river flows so that the river may continue to be a resource to the communities through which it flows.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Focusing on Georgia and the Flint River basin, develop and promote policies/plans that advance water efficiency, conservation and low impact supplies, and restore and protect healthy river flows.
  • Represent the interests of American Rivers and its partners before relevant municipal, state, and federal agencies to establish regulations and statutes that enhance water efficiency and healthy river flows.
  • Establish and maintain regular lines of communication and develop cooperative initiatives with relevant water management utilities, agencies and industry groups in the Flint River basin, metro Atlanta and Georgia in order to reform policies and practices for water efficiency.
  • Convene key constituencies, develop consensus and publish reports on water efficiency policies to be pursued in the Flint River basin and communities across Georgia.
  • Engage with the media and produce communications materials that further American Rivers’ conservation goals in the Southeast. Build awareness about American Rivers’ conservation priorities through blog posts, social media and webpage updates. 
  • Represent American Rivers at conferences, meetings, press events and other public events.  
  • Work with Program Directors and Development Department to identify and secure funding, and draft fundraising proposals and reports as needed.
  • Maintain excellent relations with other American Rivers staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Advanced degree in policy, law, natural or physical science, or other related disciplines preferred.
  • At least 2 years experience working in the area of natural resource policy or management at a state, regional, or federal level.
  • Experience in state water management policy, water efficiency policy and programs, federal policy, and knowledge of federal and state natural resource laws and policy preferred.
  • Experience working with local water providers preferred.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a conservation and public policy advocate with strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and astute political judgment essential.
  • Strategic thinker; highly organized and able to meet deadlines.
  • Team player and demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues to advance an organization’s broader goals.
  • Experience writing grant proposals, reports, and other fundraising activities are desirable.
  • High energy level, self-motivated individual able to work independently.
