Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level (www.unep.org). Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. In the framework of the Medium-term Strategy and the climate change thematic priority, UNEP's work on climate change adaptation helps to build the scientific and knowledge base, facilitate the integration of science into adaptation policy setting and planning, and support countries build ecosystem resilience and enhance ecosystem services for adaptation. UNEP also supports adaptation finance mechanisms, assists countries in accessing these resources, and provides technical support to help guide their investments into cost-effective options. The post is located in UNEP's Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI), Climate Change Adaptation Unit (CCAU), at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of Chief, Climate Change Adaptation Unit (CCAU), the incumbent will perform the following functions:
Responsibilities
1. Develop and implement climate change adaptation projects and initiatives under UNEP Programme of Work: Participate in the provision of policy support and advisory services; Contribute to the development of communication and awareness-raising materials; Liaise with the general public; Act as the UNEP Focal Point for the UNFCCC Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change; Participate in the planning and development of the functions and activities of the CCAU; Facilitate the development and maintenance of partnerships for the implementation of UNEP's adaptation activities.
2. Build key adaptive capacity in developing countries through the development of the Global Adaptation Network: Coordinate the Global Network activities and the provision of support to the Regional Network activities from the Global Network structures; Lead the development of a knowledge management system, set up a functioning and interactive website, initiate a database of best practices; Support resource mobilization for the Network; Draft proposals for funding.
3. Provide technical support and backstopping to the Regional Gateway for Technology Transfer and Climate Change Action in Latin America and the Caribbean (REGATTA) and project partners: Define work plans, activities and budgets in close collaboration with UNEP Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC); Coordinate implementation of REGATTA knowledge management and capacity building activities in collaboration with ROLAC; Provide feedback and ensure quality control of all technical outputs, publications and reports; Contribute to the development of knowledge products and communication materials, and provide technical inputs to the organization of regional, sub-regional and national meetings; Ensure linkages (coherence, synergies and information flow) between REGATTA adaptation components and the Global Adaptation Network, as well as UNEP's work on adaptation.
4. Information sharing of climate change adaptation activities within UNEP and improved coordination of the activities: Facilitate the organization of and participate in intra- and interdivisional meetings and workshops and coordinate adaptation activities; Maintain and update a database of UNEP adaptation activities; Ensure that the UNEP website on climate change adaptation is kept up-to-date; Liaise with other Units, Divisions and Regional Offices in the development of projects and other initiatives.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Communication: Excellent drafting and communication skills, both written and oral; Ability to prepare project documents, strategy papers, briefing notes and reports that are clear and concise.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environment or development related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in the field of sustainable development. Experience in climate change adaptation issues is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
