Special Assistant to the Special Envoy for Climate Change - US State Department

Work for the U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change at the U.S. Department of State on one of the most significant international challenges of our century:  global climate change.  The U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change leads the U.S. government’s efforts in all aspects of international climate change, including the international negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Major Economies Forum and other multilateral and international fora, and bilateral relationships with other countries to address this pressing issue.  We shape the development and implementation of international climate change policy and partnerships,  as well as efforts on adaptation and land-use cooperation.  Our work is fast-paced, demanding, and high-profile. 

We are soliciting interest for the position of Special Assistant to the Special Envoy for Climate Change.

General Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working on climate change for the U.S. Government; NGO experience a plus.
  • Experience coordinating with interagency partners and high-level officials.
  • Academic background in environmental studies; focus on climate change a plus.
  • Strong team player, eager to help solve problems. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly under time pressure. 
  • Ability to reliably deliver on multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Fluency/proficiency in a foreign language a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary staff support to the Special Envoy for Climate Change, the lead U.S. international climate negotiator and coordinator for USG policy on international climate change, both in day to day operations in Washington and during meetings abroad, including at the 190+ nation annual COP meeting.
  • Arrange for the organization of briefing materials for meetings, multinational and international conferences, and bilateral engagements in which the Special Envoy participates.
  • Draft and clear talking points, briefing memos and policy papers for the Special Envoy and other high-level Administration officials.
  • Coordinate briefing materials with White House representatives and other interagency partners.
  • Participate in meetings on international climate change policy and U.S. government strategy.
  • Handle logistical preparations for meetings the Special Envoy participates in, liaising with embassies, conference support specialists, and the special assistants of Ministers and other high-level representatives around the world.
  • Help ensure smooth flow of communications within the office as well as with key interlocutors throughout the Department and at embassies worldwide.  Also coordinate information flow to key members of the interagency community.
  • Maintain accessible and reliable organization system for the Special Envoy’s papers, notes, briefing materials etc.
  • Perform special projects for the Special Envoy on an ad hoc basis.
