I grew up in Denmark and graduated in economics from the University of Copenhagen with a 1st class degree in 1958, by which time I had married my Australian wife Isobel. We emigrated to Australia in 1959 together with our 2-year old daughter Marianne (now an artist and teacher), soon after I gained my degree. Our eldest son, Ove, future scientist specializing in coral reefs, climate and other global change, was born during our first year in Australia. Twins Paul and Martin followed in 1963. Paul is co-principal and art director of Vox Associates in Los Angeles. Martin owns a Sydney-based internet marketing company. There are eleven grandchildren aged from 25 to one.
My working life has kept me in close contact with my academic discipline, which was very well taught in Copenhagen, at least in the 1950s when I attended. This has enabled me to develop professionally, over the past 25 years taking me into applied ecological/environmental and cultural economics, including its adaptation to climate change. I always seek to provide a firm basis of economic theory for the projects I undertake.
