Abstract

The Governor’s Conference on Extreme Climate Risks and California’s Future provides viewers with unique case studies highlighting climate change adaptation, mitigation and innovation strategies.

Experts examine the effects of wind patterns, temperature levels and droughts on industrial systems such as electricity. Only a few degrees of temperature increase can significantly stress an electrical system, even causing it to crash.

The video touches on the Shade Tree Program, which focuses on reducing ambient air temperature by planting shade trees, in order to reduce a community’s electric needs.

Communities can also work with local emergency teams to prepare for extreme heat events and floods. In certain areas of California, parts that have never experienced flooding have become victim to devastating floods in the past two decades.

Sustainable communities and college campuses set examples, showing that it is possible to establish net zero communities, creating as much energy as is consumed. This in particular represents an important goal that towns can adopt across the country.
