Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife, and Parks
Overview
The Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement, Faune et des Parcs (Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife, and Parks; MDDEFP) operates in the following areas:
- Development and implementation of policies, laws, regulations, and programs on:
- Preventing and reducing water, air, and ground contamination
- Combating and adapting to climate change
- Ensuring the quality of drinking water
- Conserving biodiversity
- Reducing, reclaiming, and managing residual materials
- Coordination of the government’s sustainable development initiative within the public service
- Development, coordination, and implementation of strategies to combat and adapt to climate change
- Protection of Québec’s ecosystems and biodiversity through the development of a network of protected areas, including national parks, and the safeguarding of threatened or vulnerable plant species and their habitats
- Environmental assessment of projects and strategic evaluation of environmental issues
- Oversight of the enforcement of environmental protection laws and regulations, especially through the analysis of authorization and permit applications, inspections, inquiries, and legal and administrative recourse
- Land management and integrity of Québec’s public water property, including the operation of public dams and monitoring of dam safety
- Observation and knowledge of ecosystems and their components
- Maintenance of intergovernmental and international relations in its areas of interest
