Jane Winn

Executive Director

I work for Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT). We protect the environment for wildlife. Some of the key adaptation strategies we are working on are: 1) assessing stream crossings (bridges and culverts) to be sure fish and wildlife - as well as high water flows - can pass safely under our transportation networks. 2) advocating for changing the standards for post-development (and post-redevelopment) run-off to be the same as the run-off that would occur if the site were forested. (Not just post- development being the same as "pre" development.) 3) Disconnect storm water pipes from our wetlands and waterways. 4) Protect headwater streams - these small, intermittent streams often make up a huge percentage of the stream-miles in a watershed and they provide nutrients to the whole system; not to mention they often support very different flora and fauna from the rest of the system.

Organization(s)

BEAT works with citizens to help them learn about the environment and their role in protecting it; BEAT keeps the public informed of current local issues that could have an impact on the environment; and BEAT helps people work together to take action to protect the environment.
