Workshop: Compounding, Cascading, and Critical Risks to U.S. Infrastructure and Security
The workshop will center on in-depth discussions exploring low-likelihood, high-impact weather/climate compound hazards affecting the United States. In considering multiple physical phenomena, critical systems, decision types, and knock-on effects, the workshop will identify and analyze risks that are compounding, cascading, and potentially unprecedented. The ultimate aim is for researcher and practitioner attendees to jointly develop workflows, guide research, and inform adaptation and governance plans across timescales. Five systems will serve as focal points:
- Built environment and urban areas
- Transportation and energy infrastructure
- Water resources
- Agriculture and food systems
- Areas of rapid change
The workshop will take place Mon, Aug 4 to Wed, Aug 6 at the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland, OR.
Attendance and logistical information:
Please fill out the short attendance and topic survey if you are considering attending and/or wish to provide ideas for exploration during the workshop. For attendance purposes, please complete the survey by May 5. We will provide confirmations and notify travel-support recipients no later than May 20. The workshop will strive for an approximately equal balance of representatives from research and practice, therefore we unfortunately cannot guarantee space for all those interested.
