Description:

The successful candidate plays a critical role to help coordinate AIJ’s work to forge meaningful relationships with Alaska Native communities and advocate for climate justice. The successful candidate will help coordinate the work of a small team of AIJ staff working with tribal communities to elevate Alaska Native voices and priorities through community-based environmental monitoring of permafrost thaw and flooding and climate justice policy development. This is an excellent role for a person who is passionate about justice, equity and decolonizing the systems that are responsible for the climate crisis.  

Responsibilities:

  •  Work with Climate Justice Program Coordinator to coordinate culturally-appropriate community meetings, workshops, and trainings with partnering Alaska Native communities, including arranging travel and workshop logistics.
  • Conduct research and assist with writing reports and developing presentations with Alaska Native communities to document environmental change and climate adaptation work.
  • Work with Climate Justice Program Coordinator to produce visually attractive project information and summaries.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies, environmental studies, or a related field that includes experience working with Alaska Native communities.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Alaska Native cultures, histories and government relations, including concepts of sovereignty and self-determination.
  • Able to work independently, collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to challenges.
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, and results-oriented.
