COASTAL RESILIENCE PROGRAM SPECIALIST
The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium (Consortium), in partnership with the College of Charleston’s School of Science and Mathematics (SSM), is seeking a Coastal Resilience Program Specialist to provide the technical expertise necessary to expand our capabilities, broaden our reach, and provide a wider range of services to the many constituencies which are requesting science-based information and technical assistance in enhancing their resilience to coastal change. The Consortium, a state agency established to manage the Sea Grant College program for South Carolina and based in Charleston, SC, optimizes the environmental, social, and economic potential of the coastal and marine resources of the state and region through the support and dissemination of high-quality research, extension, and education programming. The College of Charleston’s SSM supports the building of adaptive capacity in South Carolina through natural science research, spatial analysis and outreach facilitating the integration of climate information into coastal management and decision making. Responsibilities The Coastal Resilience Program Specialist (CRPS) will collaborate with the Consortium’s Climate and Resilience Specialist to address the coastal climate impacts and resiliency needs of a variety of constituencies by (1) extending science-based climate and weather information and its impact at regional and local levels and (2) providing hands-on operational and technical support to coastal communities, resource managers, and interest groups in South Carolina and the region, in support of fostering coastal community resilience.
Enhance breadth and depth of science and extension programming of the Consortium and SSM by accessing information being generated by the College of Charleston, other Consortium member institutions, state and federal agencies, and additional partners. Collaborate with SSM to provide tailored, decision-relevant information on the implications of climate and weather variability and change to coastal decision makers, such as residents, government officials, and business people.
Provide communities with current information and technical assistance to understand and select appropriate mitigation and adaptation tools and methods aimed at resilience for a range of hazards. Build awareness of and support coastal decision makers as they seek to evaluate and plan for the impacts of climate and weather variability and coastal change on, for example, chronic and episodic coastal flooding, shoreline erosion, land use, salt water intrusion, fisheries, tourism, community development.
Enhance capacity in communities and organizations by working with municipalities as they update their comprehensive plans through direct technical assistance in assimilating climate science and using it in their planning.
Evaluate and review improvements in Consortium and SSM climate and resilience education and outreach capacity and approaches.
Analyze and provide up-to-date information about climate impacts, and resilience strategies to a variety of audiences through diverse means.
Be current on data, trends and conditions which describe the status of coastal and oceanographic processes, chronic and episodic natural hazard events, hazard mitigation and adaptation.
Identify existing and emerging opportunities related to coastal processes awareness, hazard mitigation and adaptation in the built environment and in economic enhancement opportunities near- and offshore in South Carolina communities.
Identify information and service needs of constituents through targeted interactions with client groups, and work with them in developing solutions to climate- and resiliencerelated issues.
Design and implement technical education programs which utilize the resources of the College of Charleston and other Consortium institutions and diverse interest groups in a pro-active approach toward hazard awareness, mitigation and adaptation strategies. Create data and information-sharing presentations and tools and products to assist stakeholders with decision support. Give formal and informal presentations on Consortium and SSM resilience activities at state, regional, and national conferences and workshops.
Work with faculty and staff at Consortium member institutions, including CofC, to design and conduct interdisciplinary applied coastal resilience research and extension projects.
Participate in the development and management of grant proposals with the Consortium, CofC, and/or other organizations and programs to secure funding for client-driven resilience research, service, and extension projects. Contribute content to communications materials produced and distributed by the Consortium and SSM.
Assist in the planning and implementation of Consortium- and SSM-sponsored state and regional conferences, workshops, and meetings.
Prepare performance-based program objectives, benchmarks, metrics, program evaluations, and other programmatic reports as required by the Consortium and CofC.
Supervise student assistants and interns and serve on graduate student committees when appropriate. Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in a marine- or coastal-related science, engineering, geosciences, or related technical field Experience in and knowledge of coastal climate and resiliency science, vulnerability assessment, adaptation
Minimum of three years of experience in coastal climate/resilience applied research and technical outreach/extension training
Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and communicate, collaborate, and work effectively with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
Experience with local government systems and participatory democracy
Ability to interpret scientific research for non-technical audiences
