Staff Scientist - National Climate Assessment

ICF seeks to hire a National Climate Assessment Staff Scientist to serve as a staff scientist and technical expert on climate science for the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) NCA team. The successful candidate will support the development of the upcoming Fifth NCA (NCA5) and amplification of the recently published Fourth NCA (NCA4). The overall responsibility will be focused on providing technical, programmatic, and content-focused leadership and support to the NCA team, as well as the author teams of both NCA5 and other Sustained Assessment products.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide scientific expertise related to global climate change for author teams, including but not limited to identifying technical resources, helping interpret indicators and modeling scenarios, and developing summaries of published research.
Write and develop a variety of materials for internal and external use, including NCA4 derivative products, slide decks for internal and external presentations, and assessment author guidance materials.
Support planning and implementation of NCA5 and future sustained assessment activities, including the activities of the Sustained Assessment Working Group.
Coordinate the activities of the NCA author teams and leadership committees, including arranging meetings, developing agendas, building out timelines, and identifying necessary resources.
Synthesize discussion and provide readouts for large meetings and internal leadership
Develop to technical analysis and development of resources to support NCA5 authors and assessment production.
Contribute to creation of tools and materials for assessment activities, such as graphical development tools and databases for capturing metadata.
Develop, plan, and implement events related to NCA report development and author support.
In collaboration with USGCRP Communications Team, identify and implement opportunities for NCA4 amplification and support, including speaking at conferences, external meetings, and events.

Minimum requirements

Master’s degree in climate science, earth science, or a closely related field. Knowledge of the technical components of climate science is required for success in this position.
Possesses the ability to locate, comprehend, summarize, and synthesize scientific materials and discussions, within academic journals, scholarly books, and government reports. A familiarity with research databases is strongly preferred
Computer literacy, including word processing, presentation, and web applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Skype, Slack, etc.)
Demonstrated organizational skills, including ability to organize and successfully implement a variety of tasks within a project, to prioritize projects or deliverables, and to carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines
Ability to proactively identify program needs and propose solutions to complex problems
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Exceptional attention to detail
Demonstrated knowledge of basic office procedures
Ability to work both as part of a professional team as well as independently, under minimal supervision; ability to be a self-starter and identify opportunities to support overall program objectives
Willingness to travel up to 1-5 times per year
Preferred qualifications:

Experience in working with government agencies is welcomed
Experience working with the academic community is welcomed
Professional experience preferred, at least one year highly desired
Experience working with digital databases is welcomed
