Abstract

Surrounded by crisp mountain vistas and an abundance of cold, clear water, Whitefish is a great place to live and visit. Our community has grown and changed, but we have maintained our friendly smalltown character by building partnerships to enhance cultural, recreational, and economic opportunities. Climate change presents an emerging set of challenges to these values. This plan seeks to address those challenges head-on to protect the qualities that enrich Whitefish.

Why a Climate Action Plan?

Whitefish is already experiencing the impacts of climate change, and the impacts are projected to accelerate in the coming decades. The City of Whitefish, Whitefish Schools, and the nonprofit Climate Smart Glacier Country have joined together with communities around the United States to take bold action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for future change.

This is necessary to ensure a stable climate future, but it is also smart business as insurers and bond rating agencies increasingly expect communities to address climate-related risk. Drafted by a mayor-appointed committee with extensive public involvement, this plan establishes the foundation for Whitefish to make the transition to a clean energy economy and improve local resilience to climate change impacts. The City and Whitefish Schools are committed to leading by example and building the partnerships for success that have long been integral to the distinctive character of Whitefish.
