Abstract

This report is intended for elected municipal officials and senior staff. It outlines decision-making processes to adapt to climate change and showcases municipal adaptation measures implemented across the country. The goal is to help municipal governments make informed decisions and take appropriate action. For those municipalities that are already developing adaptation measures, this document can help enhance an understanding of climate change adaptation among elected officials, staff and the broader community.

Case studies are included in the report from different communities around the country, including Clyde River, City of Kamloops, Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, London (Ontario), Toronto, Quebec City, Le Goulet, Halifax, and Annapolis Royal.

Understanding what climate change means for Canada requires addressing potential impacts and how we, as a country, can best adapt. Adaptation is a critical response to climate change and is complementary to mitigation (which aims to reduce the rate and magnitude of climate change). Adaptation will reduce our vulnerability to climate change and allow us to take advantage of potential opportunities.

Since 1998, Natural Resources Canada’s Climate Change Impacts & Adaptation Division has funded more than 300 impacts and adaptation research projects.
