Summary:

The Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS) and the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary (CBNMS) partnered to create a Climate Change Impacts Working Group, which produced a regional assessment of potential climate change impacts and recommendations for management responses. The working group released its report in June 2010.

Summary:

The Global Marine Hotspots Network was created because the oceans are not warming evenly and those areas that are warming the fastest – ocean warming ‘hotspots’ – can be considered as the world’s natural laboratories to provide the knowledge and tools to enable us to adapt wisely, efficiently, and effectively to meet the challenges of a warming environment.

Summary:

In 2006, the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program updated the Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan (ORMP), a statewide plan to protect and improve the condition of ocean resources in the state.

Summary:

The British Columbia Government released a Climate Action Plan in 2008. As part of the effort to address climate change, the government is building a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy to address climate change impacts as it continues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the province.

Summary:

In October 2010, the U.S. Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force released a series of recommendations to President Obama on how federal agencies could coordinate and collaborate on a national adaptation strategy. The Task Force released two progress reports in 2010 and 2011, and plans to continue to support implementation of the recommendations.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and state and tribal wildlife agencies, created a National Fish, Wildlife, and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy to coordinate climate change responses in both the public and private sector.

The National Marine Protected Areas Center (MPA Center) is preparing for climate change by building a national system of MPAs. This national system is meant to be geographically and ecologically diverse and represent local, state, regional, and national interests.

The Puerto Rico Coastal Management Program (PRCZMP) is conducting a two-year Coastal Adaptation Project. The goal is to develop a coastal zone vulnerability assessment and appropriate adaptation strategies to help Puerto Rico cope with existing coastal hazards and future climate changes.

Effective species management requires an understanding of species’ response to changing conditions. The Atlantis model, used by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, explores ecosystems to consider impacts of multiple factors. It is currently being used to consider fisheries, climate change, the impacts of pollutants, and habitat damage due to fishing and mining.
