Climate change presents an uncertain future with potentially high costs for Missoula County in western Montana. The area's economy and high quality of life that draw and keep people in the region could be in jeopardy due to changes in average temperature, stream flows, and precipitation.
The High Divide region links together core protected areas in Montana and Idaho and is an important migration corridor for big game, grizzly bears, and other carnivores. To help maintain critical linkage areas in the region, the Craighead Institute is working on a set of conservation planning tools intended to guide wildlife-friendly land use and development.
