NESCAUM (Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management)

Overview

NESCAUM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association of air quality agencies in the Northeast. Our Board of Directors consists of the air directors of the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont), New Jersey, and New York. Our purpose is to provide scientific, technical, analytical, and policy support to the air quality and climate programs of the eight Northeast states. A fundamental component of our efforts is to assist our member states in implementing national environmental programs required under the Clean Air Act and other federal legislation.

NESCAUM hosts committees and workgroups comprised of state staff who meet regularly to discuss issues ranging from regional haze to air permitting to mobile source issues. NESCAUM also provides forums for public education, promotes air quality initiatives such asClean Air Communities (CAC) and the Northeast Diesel Collaborative (NEDC), and hosts theClean Air Academy which provides advanced air quality training for state officials.

NESCAUM's Climate and Energy Team supports the Northeast states in their individual and regional efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve energy efficiency, and implement clean and renewable energy technologies. Our efforts include a variety of activities to support states in meeting their climate and energy goals, such as technical assistance, policy analysis, and strategic communications and outreach. The Climate and Energy Team also participates on behalf of NESCAUM states in federal and international climate policy debates and identifies emerging climate and energy issues for our members. We strive to provide a forum for the states to work together to address climate and energy challenges.

NESCAUM's projects cover four main focal areas:
