Overview

The U.S. Geological Survey's St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center has a primary focus of investigating processes related to coastal and marine environments and their societal implications related to natural hazards, resource sustainability, and environmental change.

Scientific programs at the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center:

• conduct research in geology, mapping, hydrology, biology, and related sciences;
• evaluate hazards associated with floods, droughts, hurricanes, subsidence, human activity, and climate change;
• map onshore and offshore geologic framework;
• assess mineral resources and develop techniques for their discovery;
• assess water resources and develop an understanding of the impact of human activities and natural phenomena on hydrologic systems;
• assess links between biodiversity, habitat condition, ecosystem processes and health;
• develop new technologies for collection and interpretation of earth science data;
• collect and maintain data and information and work to provide this data in multiple forms to a variety of users;
• develop ways to share, serve and process information and to provide geospatial context to information;
• provide scientific support and technical advice for legislative, regulatory, and management decisions;
• cooperate with other federal, state, and local agencies, and with academia and industry.
